What to Wear and How Draping Works

What you take off, what stays on, how the sheet is handled, and why the answer is entirely yours to choose.

The undressing question stops more people from booking a first massage than the price does. It deserves a direct answer.

You remove what you are comfortable removing, and nothing beyond that. There is no minimum. Some people undress completely under the sheet, some keep underwear on, some keep a bra on, and some stay fully clothed in soft layers and get a perfectly good session through fabric. Every one of those is a normal choice and none of them requires a reason.

Draping is the industry term for how the sheet is handled, and the rule is simple. You are covered the entire time except for the specific area being worked on. If the therapist is on your shoulder, your shoulder is uncovered and everything else is not. When they move to your leg, the shoulder gets covered again first. The sheet is tucked, not draped loosely, so nothing slides when you shift position.

A Utah-licensed therapist is required to keep it that way. It is not a courtesy that varies by how busy the room is.

The therapist leaves the room while you undress and get under the sheet, and knocks before returning. The same happens at the end. Nobody watches you get on or off the table.

What to arrive in: whatever comes off and goes back on easily. Leggings and a loose top are the standard for a reason. If you are staying clothed for the session, thin and stretchy works far better than jeans, because a therapist cannot do much through stiff fabric.

Underwear is worth thinking about for one practical reason. Lower back and hip work sits near the waistband, so if you keep something on, a lower cut gives the therapist more to work with. This is why some people keep underwear on and slide it down slightly themselves once they are under the sheet. Entirely your call, and the therapist will work around whatever you decide without comment.

Bra straps are the other common one. Shoulder and upper back work is easier without them. Unhooking is enough, and keeping it on entirely is fine too if that is what feels right.

Oil is used on skin during the session, so expect a little on your clothes afterward if they go straight back on. It is coconut-based and washes out, but wear something forgiving if you care about the outfit.

Jewelry comes off. Rings especially, since fingers change during pregnancy and a ring that was easy at twelve weeks may not be at thirty. There is somewhere to put it in the room.

Socks stay on if your feet are cold. The room runs warm but not everyone agrees with the thermostat, and there are extra blankets if you want one. Ask.

If anything about the draping does not feel right during a session, say so immediately. That is not an awkward thing to raise. It is the exact thing a professional wants to hear about while it can still be corrected.
